Liverpool U23s out of cup
Liverpool U23s were knocked out of the Premier League Cup last night after losing 3-1 to Middlesbrough.
Neil Critchley’s men went out at the last-16 stage of the competition after a hat-trick from Boro’s Mitchell Curry.
Matthew Virtue scored a consolation goal for Liverpool but it failed to spark a comeback.
Nathaniel Clyne did make an appearance for the Reds and came through the game at Bishop Auckland relatively unscathed.
Can has the ability to play for a ‘very big club’
Emre Can believes he has the abilities to play for a ‘very big club’ next season.
Can has failed to commit to signing a new contract at Anfield and there is belief among the club that he will leave the club when his current contract expires in June.
The German midfielder has been speaking to Suddeutsche Zeitung and said: “I have the self-confidence to say my qualities are sufficient to play in a very big club next season.
“I’m doing great in England. The Spanish league is also attractive. “
Wijnaldum opens up about illness
Gini Wijnaldum has been talking about how he lost a shocking amount of weight due to an illness which kept him out of the side recently.
Wijnaldum returned to the side in the recent 5-0 win over Watford at Anfield but has missed games in the last few weeks against West Ham, Porto and Newcastle.
Speaking to De Telegraaf, Wijnaldum said: “I was hit by a violent infection which caused me to lose weight.
“It lasted for two weeks. After five days blood had already been taken from me, but it did not show what was there. Only after my faeces were examined did bacteria appear.
“I’ve had to work on my fitness again. I have trained hard but on Saturday I noticed that I need rhythm for the way I play. It’s going better but I’m not as fit as before I got sick.”
