Gomez Suffers Ankle Injury, Matip Praises Klopp’s Tactics, Anfield Set For Expansion?

Afternoon Bulletin

International Break:

Joe Gomez suffered an ankle injury that forced him to withdraw in the first half of the game against Netherlands. The extent of Gomez’s injury is unknown.

Jordan Henderson was named captain for the friendly against Netherlands. The game saw Wijnaldum, Van Dijk, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gomez all feature.

Mohamed Salah ALSO continued his excellent form as he scored for Egypt in the game against Portugal.

Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk has been appointed the new captain for Netherlands and ex-Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt was quick to praise the defender.

Kuyt told Liverpool FC:

“I think it’s a great achievement for him. Ronald Koeman took over the national team and last week in Holland they discussed a lot about who’s going to be the next captain and his name came up quite a few times. I think at the moment, for this team, a young team, he’s the best choice and it’s a great achievement for him.”

Club News:

Joel Matip has praised Jurgen Klopp’s tactics in close games with the manager opting to add an extra centre-back to provide solidity.

Matip said: “Normally I would say it always helps to have another centre-back on who helps with the defence – who has defending in his mind, in his head – to give more solidity in the last few minutes, but of course you also have to adapt to the new situation.

We have done this a few times now though so it is no longer a new situation for the players on the pitch to deal with.”

Stadium News:

Liverpool will accelerate plans to expand the Anfield Road end of the stadium. Discussions have also begun with numerous companies about naming rights. The club have until September 2019 to submit details regarding their proposed expansion. The proposed expansion of the Anfield Road end would bring the stadium’s capacity above 60,000.
