Salah’s brace sends Liverpool a point off the top four

Man of the Match Friends of Liverpool

Once again this season Liverpool were guided to a fantastic victory through the heroics of Mohamed Salah, whose double sent his side fifth in the league in a 3-0 win over Southampton.

The Egyptian proved his worth yet again with two goals in ten first-half minutes, before Philippe Coutinho found the net in the second half to round off a brilliant day for the home side at Anfield.

Salah found the opening goal of the game with a wonderful curling effort from 18 yards, before prodding home a second from a Coutinho through ball, much to the delight of the Anfield crowd. The forward was on top of the opposition all afternoon, showing extreme confidence and composure in front of goal, while also constantly linking up with fellow attackers Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane to threaten the Southampton defence.

In a torrid afternoon for the away team, who faced a total of 21 shots, Salah proved to be the key to breaking the deadlock and was undoubtedly the main danger man for the home side. And while Salah and co. were on fine form up top, the Reds have now conceded just one goal in their past eight Premier League games at Anfield, keeping seven clean sheets in the process.

And to round off a splendid display, Mohamed Salah has now had a better goal scoring start to a career at Liverpool than any of the club’s players in the Premier League era, an outstanding feat for the Egyptian who has cemented a place in the hearts of the Anfield faithful in his first season at the club.

With crucial decision making and problem-solving, Salah was a thorn in Southampton’s side for the entirety of his 80 minutes on the pitch, before being substituted for James Milner to a deserved standing ovation from the home support.

Salah now has 14 goals from his 18 games in a Liverpool shirt, meaning no Premier League player has more goals in all competitions than Salah this season, a simply phenomenal return for a player acquired for such a bargain in the current transfer climate.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have now won three consecutive Premier League games for the first time in 2017, with much of their success due to Salah’s fantastic performances, and the attacker must continue his fine run of form as Liverpool travel to Sevilla midweek for a Champions League grudge match, before entertaining Chelsea in the evening kick-off the following Saturday.
