Liverpool finally won a game after their four winless games in September, with a 2-3 win over Leicester City at the King Power stadium on Saturday.
It has been beyond frustrating being a Liverpool fan lately, watching the defence crumble week in week out against generally weaker sides and after already losing to Leicester in midweek, it was a case of just wanting Saturday’s clash to be over and done with.
But it was all different once it kicked off. Once again, the travelling Kop was behind the team and the atmosphere was brilliant as the Reds won their first away game in the league this season.
They didn’t make it easy though. Liverpool NEVER make it easy. 2-0 up in 20-odd minutes had the entire away end ecstatic, the Liverpool we travelled hundreds of miles to see actually turned up, but it was inevitable that they would concede and that goal had to come just before the interval. Leicester were back in the game and the pattern re-emerged. Liverpool constantly put themselves in a position of strength only to miss an opportunity to put the game beyond doubt.
But I won’t focus on the negatives. Liverpool won. Three points. It was a good game for some, one of Jordan Henderson’s best as captain. It was their first ever win at the King Power stadium under Jürgen Klopp and Philippe Coutinho won back fans’ hearts with a neatly placed free-kick. Liverpool almost threw it away when Simon Mignolet brought down Jamie Vardy, but the ‘keeper redeemed himself with a fine save.
It still wasn’t the beating that Leicester deserved, but Liverpool played like a team that deserved the win. They earned the three points. They worked hard for the confidence boost they very much needed after a dreadful September so far. It may only be Leicester and they may have eliminated Liverpool from the League Cup, but what many people fail to understand is how the win and the team performance overall can boost the team.
Liverpool travel to Russia to face Spartak Moscow on Tuesday, they are going for the three points and should not settle for any less after a disappointing result against Sevilla two weeks ago. Players like Henderson and Alberto Moreno are constantly being scrutinised, but they proved their ability on Saturday, with the skipper even bagging himself a goal.
It is so early in the season that you cannot even predict what will happen come May, but if Liverpool manage to sort out a few problems they have at the back to provide the goalkeeper with some solid support, the Reds could well be adding some silverware to the cabinet, but I don’t want to jinx it.
It’s tough. You can’t get too excited when you watch a team like Liverpool throw away a two-goal lead, but you are allowed to be happy about it. Liverpool fans are like no other fans. No matter what, we will sing, we will shout and we will back our team to victory and that’s the way it should be.
