Under-19s prepare for Champions League

It’s not just the senior side who are involved in European actions today. Liverpool Under-19s are also travelling to Moscow to play in their second UEFA Youth League tie against Spartak. They’ll be hoping to build on their winning start after thrashing Sevilla 4-0 in their opening fixture. This puts the young Reds at the top of the group, while Spartak Moscow lost 1-0 to Maribor, on matchday 1. The game kicked off at 12pm BST, but delayed coverage is available on LFCTV and LFCTV GO.

Round up of the Friday matches

With the senior team getting back to winning ways, finally, how did the rest of Liverpool Football Club’s squads fare over the weekend? It kicked off on Friday night, when the Under-23 side beat Spurs 4-2, thanks mainly to a first half hat-trick from Harry Wilson. The captain has now scored five goals in his last two appearances, and he continues to show just how much of a serious talent that he is. The match was a special occasion for the youngsters as it was being played on the hallowed turf of Anfield. Rhian Brewster scored the fourth and final goal, with a delightful lob and he spoke about getting his first goal at the main stadium. The 17-year-old said, “It’s a special feeling playing at Anfield and scoring my first goal in front of the Kop was a great feeling, and hopefully I can get a lot more in the future.”

The Under-18s also played on Friday night and Steven Gerrard bagged his first win in the “mini-derby”. Despite falling behind, the Reds rallied hard and came back to beat Everton 3-1, mainly thanks to a double from Curtis Jones. The Reds were 1-0 down at half time and had to wait until the 69th minute to draw level, but once they had it was plain sailing. Jones took the score line to 2-1, before Rafael Camacho rounded things off with a nice low finish.

Liverpool Ladies also got one over on the local rivals, with a 2-0 win over Everton on Friday. The match was the first of the new Women’s Super League season, so it was excellent for the Reds to get off to winning ways in such an important fixture. Two second half goals from Niamh Charles eased the team to victory, which was made all the more impressive by the fact that they had five debutants in the starting XI. The ladies continue their WSL campaign this Friday, with a home tie against Reading.
