Season in Numbers: Part Ten

The tenth and final piece in a summer series highlighting all the important facts and figures from a rollercoaster season at Liverpool Football Club, with some huge revelations after a significant season in Jurgen Klopp’s Anfield revolution.

2 – Premier League starts for Trent Alexander-Arnold

The youngster broke into the first team after impressing for the youth sides and captaining the under 23s after being tipped to have a bright future at Anfield by none other than Steven Gerrard, and may well pressure Nathaniel Clyne into losing his first choice spot at right back.

10 – Goals scored in pre-season against English opponents

Liverpool managed an impressive ten goals in their four English friendlies against Tranmere, Fleetwood, Wigan and Huddersfield in July 2016, while not conceding any goals in the process. This summer’s pre-season was slightly different in both the scheduling and the results, where the Reds beat Tranmere 4-0 and drew 1-1 with Wigan, therefore scoring five and conceding one in the two games played in mid-July.

105 – Successful crosses in the Premier League

Liverpool’s wide men produced a total of 105 successful crosses in the 38-game league campaign, yet a disappointing total of 458 crosses were unsuccessful, and so this is an area that requires major improvement as Liverpool launch their long-awaited title challenge.

1 – Goal for Lucas Leiva

The Brazilian left Anfield earlier in July after ten years at the club, and bagged his only goal last season in the 1-0 FA Cup Third Round replay at Plymouth Argyle in mid-January. In a heartfelt farewell, players, coaches and fans alike offered their best wishes to the club’s most recent longest-serving player.

16 – Appearances for Loris Karius

After a shaky start to his Liverpool career, the young German certainly improved and made a total of 16 appearances in all competitions, gaining the number one spot for a brief period, but was replaced by Simon Mignolet after a poor spell between the sticks. He may once again challenge for the spot this season, yet the return of Danny Ward has, however, put immense pressure on his Anfield future, with the Welsh shot-stopper in contention for a starting role after impressing on loan at Huddersfield.

7 – Goals scored against Watford in the league

Liverpool managed seven goals in total against Watford in the 16/17 campaign, winning 6-1 at home and 1-0 away, and as our opening fixture of the upcoming season, they will certainly be no pushovers with the new reign of talented manager Marco Silva well under way.

3,917 – Unsuccessful passes in 38 league games

The Reds sprayed countless short and long-range passes throughout their tiresome season, and 3,917 of these failed to find another Liverpool player, compared to the 18,366 passes that did manage to successfully find an anticipating team-mate in red.
