Jurgen Klopp is set to hand Loris Karius a boost this weekend with the opportunity to a start in Liverpool’s FA Cup clash against Plymouth Argyle at Anfield on Sunday.
The Reds, currently placed second in the Premier League behind leaders Chelsea, take a break from league action with an enticing cup tie against the League Two side, who are managed by Derek Adams.
German keeper Karius has been out of favour and has not played for Liverpool since the Premier League game against West Ham last month; after which Klopp chose to hand the position back to Simon Mignolet.
Speaking at the press conference ahead of the cup match, Klopp, asked if Karius will feature, said:
“He has a big chance. He has trained outstandingly good. It’s good to see. It’s difficult to speak about things like this in public, because you make all of these things big stories – that’s a little bit of the problem.”
“But we cannot ignore the pressure you make. That’s how it is. We have to cope with it, we have to deal with it and that’s why we made the change. I was sure Loris would benefit from this step back, if you want, or step aside or whatever.”
“Simon has done a really outstandingly good job for us since he has been playing again. And Loris forces him to train on the highest level because we have two really good goalkeepers. So, it was good for him.”
The high-flying Reds are back in cup action once more on Wednesday when they travel to the south coast for face Southampton in the first leg of the Football League Cup Semi-final.
Then they head to bitter rivals Manchester United on January 15 to face Jose Mourinho’s men at an early anticipated encounter at Old Trafford.
