Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will revert to a strong side when the Reds travel to face Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.
The changes to his starting line-up will come after Klopp field the youngest-ever side in Liverpool history for the 0-0 draw at home to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup yesterday.
Klopp’s mean were frustrated by dogged defending from the visitors and a draw means a replay at Home Park — a game that the Reds could do without with their fixtures coming thick and fast.
But the bottom line is that they are in the hat for the draw for the fourth round which will take place at 7.10pm later today.
On Plymouth’s gritty display Klopp said:
“It was very disciplined and good. We knew that before. It was not for one second an open game. It was a very dominant game from my side, but with no real chances.”
“One or two shots, that’s normal the longer the game is. But they did everything they had to do to deserve a rematch. Now we have it, yippee! Plymouth is a good place to go.”
Before that, though he must take his charges to the south coast for the first round of a tie that could see them reach Wembley for the final.
Liverpool are then back in league action at the weekend when they go to old rivals Manchester United in the Premier League for a keenly anticipated encounter, kick off is at 4pm on Sunday, January 15.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have sold defender Tiago Ilori, 23, to Championship outfit Reading for a £3.75million fee. Ilori joined Liverpool for £7million from Sporting Lisbon in 2013 but has failed to make an impact.
