{"id":10756,"date":"2021-01-31T10:17:32","date_gmt":"2021-01-31T10:17:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.friendsofliverpool.com\/?p=10756"},"modified":"2021-02-01T10:47:45","modified_gmt":"2021-02-01T10:47:45","slug":"liverpool-deliver-first-win-of-2021-to-put-spurs-to-the-sword","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.friendsofliverpool.com\/2021\/01\/liverpool-deliver-first-win-of-2021-to-put-spurs-to-the-sword\/","title":{"rendered":"Liverpool deliver first win of 2021 to put Spurs to the sword"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Having gone five league matches without a win and four without scoring, Jurgen Klopp\u2019s team epitomised a wounded animal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hurt by media and opposition criticism that claimed this was the perfect time to face off against the champions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Liverpool showed fight and resolve to triumph 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Jos\u00e9 Mourinho\u2019s Spurs to get their title hopes back on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>As it unfolded<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Much has been made of Liverpool\u2019s lack of creativity and goals up front having not mustered a goal in four league matches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the visitors nearly made the worst possible start, as a fine one-two between Spurs strikers Son Heung-min and Harry Kane saw Son slot past Alisson as he wheeled away in celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the South Korean\u2019s heel was a fraction offside as VAR correctly chalked off the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liverpool and Klopp were left to breathe a huge sigh of a relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The champions kept pressing and got the goal they so richly deserved just before half-time as Jordan Henderson\u2019s chipped ball over the top of the Spurs defence, was chested down by Sadio Mane, who swept a delightful ball across the box for Bobby Firmino to tap home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tottenham v Liverpool (1-3) | Man\u00e9 steals the show! | Premier League Highlights\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xu_qk41pisk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The second half had barely started when Hugo Lloris palmed Mane\u2019s curling effort was into the path of Trent Alexander-Arnold who finished with aplomb to put Liverpool in the driving seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spurs hit back though through an opportunist effort from the impressive Pierre-Emile H\u00f8jbjerg who fired in a 25-yard blockbuster to keep the hosts in touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liverpool looked like they had bagged a third as a fine breakaway move saw Mane tee up strike partner Mo Salah who rifled in\u2026only to be overruled by VAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The technology ruled that Firmino had deliberately moved his arm towards the ball in the build-up to the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">F I N I S H \ud83e\udd29\u26bd\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qXjHwo6vOR\">pic.twitter.com\/qXjHwo6vOR<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Liverpool FC (@LFC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LFC\/status\/1355071936179613697?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 29, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Klopp\u2019s men weren\u2019t to be denied though, as a fine lobbed cross into the box by Alexander-Arnold, was slammed home by Mane to ensure Liverpool of a much needed three points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Big performances all over the pitch<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Boss Jurgen Klopp would have been delighted by the performances of all his players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a goal, an assist and a hard-working shift from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofliverpool.com\/2019\/06\/rich-praise-totally-deserved-for-liverpool-hero-alexander-arnold\/\">local hero Alexander-Arnold<\/a>, he was full value for man of the match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Alexander-Arnold: We&#039;re the same team we always have been | MOTM display for Liverpool full back\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CpHT4z3wXfQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, he was not the only eye-catching performance out there, as captain Henderson was instrumental in rallying his troops, and dragging them over the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James Milner the workhorse, also worked tirelessly in midfield, as did Dutchman Gini Wijnaldum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Firmino and Mane quickly looked back to their very best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/1JohnAchterberg\/status\/1354919635175563265\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They did not look like a team that took 482 minutes of Premier League action before finding the net.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of a sudden, the gloom was lifted around the Anfield club as they swept to their first win in the Premier League since the 19<sup>th<\/sup> December\u2019s 7-0 demolition of Crystal Palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It does make you wonder how good this Liverpool team would have been had it not lost injured stars Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Diogo Jota through injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Klopp\u2019s men capitalise on rivals slip-ups<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having seen Leicester and Everton draw, as well as Chelsea and Wolves, the biggest shock of the mid-week fixtures had seen Sheffield United stun Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liverpool did not disappoint as they went back to Merseyside with all three points to go fourth in the Premiership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;That was who we are!&quot; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The victory puts them seven points off top spot Manchester City, but quite crucially, only two points off Leicester City and three off United respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Injury FC as defensive crisis mounts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The main downside for Klopp\u2019s men was the loss of defender Joel Matip, with the Cameroon international coming off at half-time with an ankle injury to add more injury woe to Klopp and his players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They had also lost midfielder and makeshift centre-half Fabinho to a minor muscle issue in training shortly before kick-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With no first team centre half\u2019s spare rookie pair, 19-year-old Rhys Williams and the inexperienced Nat Philipps, pressure has mounted on Klopp and the club to dip into the transfer market with only two days left till the close of the transfer window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"West Ham v Liverpool - Jurgen Klopp - &#039;We Don&#039;t Close Our Eyes&#039; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The club has remained reluctant to sign anyone until the summer, prioritising signing the right player at the right price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It appears a short-term solution may be in the offing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If rumours are to be believed, 28-year-old German World Cup winner Shkodran Mustafi, seems the most likely. With his contract up in the summer, an early release settlement may be enough for Arsenal to part with the defender on the fringes of first team action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sale to Liverpool would free up the wage bill at the Emirates especially after the absence of crowds due to Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other options have also included Southampton\u2019s 24-year-old Polish centre back Jan Bednarek, West Ham\u2019s Issa Diop, as well as free agents Neven Suboti\u0107, formerly of Borussia Dortmund, and former Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay, the experienced Argentinian all under consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/AnfieldWatch\/status\/1355203524410355720\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A more costly option would be Lille\u2019s Sven Botman with the Dutchman valued at around 18 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the club has reportedly made contact with Champions League knockout stages opponents, Leipzig, over the availability of defenders Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konat\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether any of these deals come to fruition though, remains to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>West Ham preview:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your only as good as your last game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liverpool\u2019s primary focus will be to pick up maximum points this week and make it six points out of six with a win against David Moyes\u2019 in form side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thursday night\u2019s performance showed Liverpool were invigorated and the entire team were driven on by the ever-vocal Henderson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Brilliant team performance and an important three points on the road. Especially with only a three-day turnover after Thursday night\u2019s endeavours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div
