Everton 0-0 Liverpool Player Ratings: A dull Merseyside Derby gives light to few outstanding performances

Everton

Jordan Pickford – 8

Was Everton’s best player by a country mile and that sums up Everton’s afternoon and the match as a whole – he produced a couple of great saves in the first half to deny Solanke and Milner, giving the on-looking Gareth Southgate plenty to contemplate.

Seamus Coleman – 6

A decent showing from the Everton right back – he covered well and also instigated the match’s first real flash-point when he squared up to Ings in the second half.

Phil Jagielka – 6

Managed to keep Liverpool at bay during a tough first half for the Everton defence, he produced a couple of full-blooded challenges in the second period that really got the home crowd going.

Michael Keane – 6

Looked much more confident playing alongside Jagielka rather than Williams – he produced a solid display albeit was let off by some wasteful Liverpool finishing.

Leighton Baines – 5

Did a decent job on the left side of the defence in a dependable manner, nearly claimed an assist with a dangerous cross late on.

Morgan Schneiderlin – 5

Was sloppy in possession and did not offer his side much of a dominant performance in the midfield area – his afternoon mostly involved just shuffling right and left in front of his defence in an attempt to limit Liverpool space.

Wayne Rooney – 4

Offered little quality and little influence – was lucky to not be booked for a cynical lunge on Solanke but found himself on the bench minutes later when Sam Allardyce substituted him, much to his visible anger.

Tom Davies – 5

Played one testing ball towards Baines whose cross almost provided the opener in the final stages – otherwise it was not a performance to remember from the young Englishman.

Theo Walcott – 6

Came to life in the final 20 minutes – after an anonymous performance in the first hour or so, he became Everton’s biggest attacking threat in the closing stages.

Yannick Bolasie – 5

Still looked a touch sluggish after a long injury layoff – he did almost open the scoring with a stunning long-distance strike that Karius tipped past the post.

Cenk Tosun – 5

Missed a gilt-edged chance in the latter stages as he put his header wide from point-blank range after good work from Walcott – he was often isolated and, for most of the match, the only player in Liverpool’s half.

Liverpool

Loris Karius 8

Like his Everton counterpart, he produced a very impressive display – came up with one of the best saves so far this season to deny Bolasie’s fierce strike.

Nathaniel Clyne – 7

A good return to the first-team – produced a solid display and was a threat to Everton’s defence when he attacked down the right side.

Dejan Lovren – 6

Untroubled for much of the match but he could have cost his side the game when he got caught the wrong side of Tosun late on, which allowed the Everton striker a run at goal.

Virgil Van Dijk – 6

A commanding and assured performance albeit against weak opposition – defensively he was required infrequently but did allow Tosun too much space during one attack on the Liverpool goal.

Ragnar Klavan – 5

Arguably came the closest to scoring during a turgid affair, shame it was almost into his own goal – it was not a performance to inspire too much confidence but he was playing in the unfamiliar position of left-back.

Georginio Wijnladum – 7

A performance possibly worthy of start at the Etihad on Tuesday with Henderson out suspended – he saw plenty of the ball in the centre of the pitch and on the whole used it well.

Jordan Henderson – 6

Started this match, as he will be unavailable in midweek, but still put in a good showing – he couldn’t quite find the right pass to penetrate a very congested and tight Everton side.

James Milner – 7

A solid outing once again – Liverpool’s ‘Mr Consistent’ deserves more credit than he often receives, supported his attacking teammates with nice through-balls and crosses and woud have even scored himself were it not for Pickford’s impressive display.

Danny Ings – 6

He never really threatened Pickford’s goal but did get heavily involved in and around the Everton area – he is a back-up with quality and a great attitude and personality who will be given more opportunities for sure.

Dominic Solanke – 5

Missed Liverpool’s most clear-cut chances – he put an early header wide and should have scored minutes later when he was denied from close range by Pickford, still yet to deliver in a Liverpool shirt but if one’s only getting minutes here and there then it is hard to make an impact and impress the supporters.

Sadio Mane – 6

Brought his confidence from recent performances to Goodison Park where he produced another lively performance – however, his composure in and around the penalty area was lacking.
