We Love You Liverpool, We Do

As mentioned elsewhere on this site, Liverpool supporters like to get behind their own team first and foremost. It means that when opposition fans turn up and end up singing songs about tragedies and poverty and other such nonsense, they can be ignored as the small-minded cretins that they are.

They might dismiss such songs as ‘banter’, but it’s not the sort of thing that Liverpool fans stoop to if it can be avoided. Instead, we prefer to sing songs that support the team or praise individual players, both past and present. There is arguably no better example of that than this particular song, the title of which tells its own story.

Loving Liverpool Before Anything Else

I will always be of the opinion that part of what has held Everton back in recent years is the fact that their supporters, and even some of the people who have worked for the club, hate Liverpool more than they love Everton.

In 2016, for example, Ronald Koeman faced the anger of Evertonians when he posted a picture of his family Christmas tree and it had red baubles on it. At the same time, the coach of the Everton Under-23s, David Unsworth, banned youth players at the club from wearing red football boots. It is obviously mad, but that’s the sort of attitude that holds you back, which is why their last trophy was in 1995.

For Kopites, meanwhile, the adoration for Liverpool FC will always be the overriding factor that dictates thoughts and feelings around the club. That is where this song comes in, the full version of which is actually much longer than most people will realise. There are numerous verses in between the most simple of choruses. They generally aren’t sung anymore, but that doesn’t mean that we should just ignore them here.

Here is the full version of the song:

Shankly is our hero, he showed us how to play

The mighty reds of Europe are out to win today

He made a team of champions, with every man a king

And every game we love to win and this is what we sing.

We Love you Liverpool, we do. We Love you Liverpool, we do.

We Love you Liverpool, we do. Oh Liverpool, we love you.

Clemence is our goalie, the best there is around.

And Keegan is the greatest that Shankly ever found.

Heighway is our favourite, a wizard of the game.

And here’s the mighty Toshack to do it once again.

We Love you Liverpool, we do. We Love you Liverpool, we do.

We Love you Liverpool, we do. Oh Liverpool, we love you.

We’ve won the league, we’ve won the cup. We’re masters of the game.

And just to prove how good we are, we’ll do it all again.

We’ve got another team to beat, and so we’ve got to try.

‘Cos we’re the best in all the land. And that’s the reason why…

We Love you Liverpool, we do. We Love you Liverpool, we do.

We Love you Liverpool, we do. Oh Liverpool, we love you!

You'll never walk alone

From Carousel to the Kop: The History of You’ll Never Walk Alone

Most Liverpool supporters could sing You’ll Never Walk Alone in their sleep, yet a fair few would struggle to tell you where it actually came from. The answer surprises some people. Before it belonged to the Kop, it belonged to Broadway, with the journey it took to get from a New York stage to the […]

I Just Can’t Get Enough: The Luis Suárez Song

Some players you sing about because they win you things. Others you sing about because you cannot take your eyes off them when they play, whatever the scoreboard says and whatever they have got themselves into that week. Luis Suárez was firmly in the second camp and the song the Kop gave him captured the […]
