Every Other Saturday – A Great Liverpool Song Enjoyed By All

If you are ever lucky enough to go to Anfield for a Liverpool game, you’ll soon notice that there are some songs that get sung by the Kop that everyone knows, largely because they haven’t got many lyrics and tend to be sung to a recognisable tune.

Meanwhile, there are other songs that are much harder to pick up on if you’ve never heard them before, which tends to be why only certain sections of them are sung loudly by everyone. The rest of the song is sung by a limited number of supporters who know every word and always have done, with Every Other Saturday definitely fitting into the latter category of Liverpool songs.

It’s a Song of Its Time

It is probably fair to say that this song is one that is of its time. It isn’t that it features anything particularly rude or the sort of thing that would make someone say, “It was considered okay at the time.” Rather, the notion of a football team playing their home matches every other Saturday is one that simply doesn’t exist anymore.

It might be true of the lower leagues, but it certainly isn’t true of the Premier League, which sees matches played whenever it suits the TV companies, regardless of how that inconveniences supporters. Equally, the idea of it being home one week and away the next is also no longer the case.

This song is one that makes reference to a number of different things that simply aren’t spoken about much anymore, such as the idea of the ‘Wembley Wizards’. Still, it is a fun one to sing that those that know the words of are more than happy to join in with gusto when the Kop chooses to bring it out for an airing.

Remarkably, it does tend to be sung in full, unlike some of the other long songs on these pages, even if you don’t necessarily realise it’s happening until it gets to the bit that most supporters know well. Here’s how it goes:

Every other Saturday’s me half day off

And it’s off to the match I go.

You’ll see me walking down the Anfield Road,

Me and me old pal Joe.

We love to see the lasses with their red scarves on,

We love to hear the Kopites roar!

But I don’t have to tell you that best of all

We love to see the Liverpool score

(Scooooore)

We’ve won the English League about a thousand times,

UEFA was a simple do.

We gave some exhibitions in the FA Cup,

We’re the Wembley Wizards too.

But when we won the European Cup in Rome,

Like we should have done years before,

We gathered down at Anfield

Boys a hundred thousand strong

To give the boys a welcome hoooooome.

Kenny!

Ohhh Kenny!

I’d walk a million miles for one of your goals

Oh Kenny!

Ohhh Kenny…

You'll never walk alone

From Carousel to the Kop: The History of You’ll Never Walk Alone

Most Liverpool supporters could sing You’ll Never Walk Alone in their sleep, yet a fair few would struggle to tell you where it actually came from. The answer surprises some people. Before it belonged to the Kop, it belonged to Broadway, with the journey it took to get from a New York stage to the […]

Some players you sing about because they win you things. Luis Suárez was firmly in the second camp and the song the Kop gave him captured the […]
