Chelsea FC You Ain’t Got No History – The Liverpool Song That Reflects The Modern Rivalry & Culture Clash

Whether we like it or not, there is no question that Liverpool have a modern-day rivalry with Chelsea. The words ‘modern-day’ are important there, given the fact that the London club only really started bothering the teams at the top of the Premier League in the wake of the Stamford Bridge side being bought by Roman Abramovich in 2003.

During the José Mourinho and Rafa Benítez years, the clubs met often, especially in the Champions League, which brought something of a feeling of ‘familiarity breeds contempt’ for the two teams and their sets of fans, which is summed up perfectly by the lyrics of this particular ditty.

A Clash of Cultures

There is no question that there is a huge clash of cultures when it comes to Liverpool and Chelsea. Although the Reds were one of the richest clubs around in the 1980s, they were still owned by a local businessman and the manner in which we went about establishing ourselves as one of the best football clubs in the world was based on doing things the ‘right’ way.

Chelsea, in comparison, were bought by a Russian billionaire who could be said to have got his money via less than ethical means. Then there are the supporters, with Chelsea fans mostly being Londoners and living lives entirely different to Scousers.

Liverpool fans show no lack of disrespect for Chelsea as a club in this song, even if it isn’t really true if we’re all honest about it. Whether we like how Chelsea gained their riches and then went on to win trophy after trophy, there is no question that they did now have said trophies in their cabinet. Still, it’s a fun song that has the added benefit of winding their supporters up. Here are the lyrics, sung to the tune of Lord of the Dance:

F**k off Chelsea F.C.,

you ain’t got no history!

Six European Cups and 20 leagues,

That’s what we call history!

(Number of European Cups and league titles increases as they’re won)

You'll never walk alone

From Carousel to the Kop: The History of You’ll Never Walk Alone

Most Liverpool supporters could sing You’ll Never Walk Alone in their sleep, yet a fair few would struggle to tell you where it actually came from. The answer surprises some people. Before it belonged to the Kop, it belonged to Broadway, with the journey it took to get from a New York stage to the […]

Some players you sing about because they win you things. Others you sing about because you cannot take your eyes off them when they play, whatever the scoreboard says and whatever they have got themselves into that week. Luis Suárez was firmly in the second camp and the song the Kop gave him captured the […]
