It is often the case that you can sense that something good is going to happen in a Liverpool season when a new song takes off. That is exactly what happened in the 2017-2018 season, when the Reds went on the march to the final of the Champions League and the Kop regularly belted out Allez, Allez, Allez.
Inspired by an Italian disco classic from the 1980s, the song tells the story of Liverpool as a European giant, having won the European Cup, latterly the Champions League, more than any other English club by some distance. What are the lyrics and the origins of the song?
Origins
It was during an away game against Porto in the Estadio do Dragão in Portugal that the song first began to be heard. That was thanks to the fact that the home fans had been singing it, which was noticed by Liverpool fans. Videos of it had been doing the rounds in Europe for some time by that point, with some Reds having seen them and introduced their fellow supporters to it after the club went 5-0 up.
The Italian song L’Estate Sta Finendo by Righeira was the basis of the tune, which provided a catchy melody that allowed even those that didn’t know the words to sing along at the crucial moments. Soon, footage of the supporters singing the song went viral, birthing a new hit. When Scouse musician Jamie Webster came up with the full version and began spreading it around in the pubs and clubs of the city, there was no stopping it.
The Lyrics
Although Liverpool’s European campaign was ultimately unsuccessful thanks to the defeat to Real Madrid in Kyiv, the trip to Ukraine proved to be one of the best that most supporters had ever been on. That might well be in part down to the tune and the manner in which it seemed to catch the zeitgeist of the club so perfectly. Here are the lyrics:
