When it comes to winning matches, titles and trophies, how many goals a goalkeeper concedes, or doesn’t concede as the case may be, can be influential.
Here is a look at the top ten goalkeepers, who played at least ten games for the Reds leading up to the end of the 2023-2024 campaign, in terms of their clean sheet percentage across all competitions:
Goalkeeper | Total Starts | Clean Sheets | Clean Sheet % |
---|---|---|---|
Sydney Ross | 21 | 11 | 52.38% |
Ray Clemence | 665 | 323 | 48.57% |
Pepe Reina | 394 | 177 | 44.92% |
Loris Karius | 49 | 22 | 44.90% |
Frank Mitchell | 18 | 8 | 44.44% |
Bruce Grobbelaar | 628 | 267 | 42.52% |
Alisson Becker | 261 | 110 | 42.14% |
Sander Westerveld | 103 | 42 | 40.78% |
Billy McOwen | 27 | 11 | 40.74% |
Diego Cavalieri | 10 | 4 | 40% |
Harry McNaughton is the best goalkeeper Liverpool have ever had, statistically, having kept a clean sheet in the only game he ever played for the club: a 1-0 win over Everton at Anfield. Of course, the more games you play, the less likely it is that you’re going to keep a clean sheet, which is what makes the 48.57% kept by Ray Clemence an the 42.53% that Bruce Grobbelaar managed all the more impressive.

Some might be surprised to learn that Loris Karius did as well as he did, but he is perhaps an example of how a good defence is also crucial to being able to keep clean sheets, even when the goalkeeper isn’t all that impressive.
