Liverpool FC Player Records

This section of our site looks at LFC player records from top goalscorers and appearance makers to players with the most own goals and best / worst disciplinary records – and everything in between.

We update the pages below after each season.  The current information is up to date as of the end of the 2023/2024 season.

Record Goalscorers

While players supposedly play more games these days it is still going to take a gargantuan effort for anyone to come close to Ian Rush’s 346 goals for the reds.  He played 660 games to get those goals and to give you a perspective Stevie G played 710 games with 186 goals to his name.  It shouldn’t be a surprise that all but one player on the top 10 list is from the past given Liverpool enjoyed it’s greatest era in the last century.

Record Player Appearances

Liverpool is a club for life for many players and you could take anyone in our top ten and they would be the record appearance holder for most other clubs.  Ian Callaghan’s 857 appearances is unlikely to ever be beaten but compare that with a club like Newcastle where all top appearances makers are below 500.  Only two on the list are goalies too, which goes to show the long term quality Liverpool have had in the outfield.

Liverpool Players With The Most Medals

Naturally given Liverpool were most dominant in the late 1970’s and 1980’s it is no surprise that the entire top ten list of players to win the most trophies with LFC is dominated by players from that era.  Alan Hansen and Phil Neal top the list, given they played at the most prolific period for the reds.  There are two goalies in there (Clemence and Grobbelaar) and, of course, Dalglish and Rush.

Most Red Cards

Historically Liverpool are known for playing the game fairly and they have won the award for the least cards in a season more than once and are never the worst disciplined team.  Still, over the years of course players have been sent off and unfortunately some more than others.  As you may predict the players with the most sendings off tend to be the most committed and that explains why Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson and Jamie Carragher are on the list.

Most Own Goals

You probably don’t even need to read this page to know that Jamie Carragher scored the joint-most own goals for the reds, with an astonishing eight to his name.  The other one with 8 OG’s is Martin Skrtel who played with Jamie – a very profile time for own goals.  Although you could certainly argue that they stopped hundreds and hundreds of goals between them so we won’t hold it against them.

Oldest and Youngest

The two oldest players to play for Liverpool were born in the 19th Century while the two youngest were born around the millennium, that tells you a lot in itself how football has changed over time.  It is hard to break through into a team like Liverpool when you are 16 or 17 but arguably it is even harder to continue playing for a great club like ours into your late 30’s.  Here we look at the five youngest and five oldest players to play for the reds.

Nationalities

The game today is a global game and so it is no surprise that players to play for Liverpool have come from over 50 different countries; ranging from Algeria to Zaire.  English is naturally the most commonly nationality followed by Scotland and Wales but we also have a lot of players that have come from Spain, thanks to Rafa Benitez largely.

Goalkeeper Clean Sheets

Keeping a clean sheet means you don’t lose and that is why the best keepers have the best stats when it comes to not conceding.  Every Liverpool goalie in our list has a clean sheet percentage of 40% or above, meaning they didn’t concede in four out of every 10 games.  Ray Clemence is the best with a clean sheet in 48.57% of matches he played – well, if you exclude Sydney Ross with 52.38% but then he only started 11 games to Clemence’s  665.

Most Games In A Season

Today we are used to the fact that top teams like the reds can play 60+ games a season easily with the continued expansion of football.  Still, it may surprise you that it is mostly in the 1980’s when players played the most games, such as the 67 games Alan Hansen, Alan Kennedy, Bruce Grobbelaar and Sammy Lee all played in the 1983-84 season.  That is mostly because Liverpool were so dominant and had a lot of games to play but we didn’t have the depth of squad and number of subs we have today.

Most Hat-Tricks

Who do you think off the top of your head might have the most hat-tricks for the reds?  If you guessed Ian Rush then you are almost right, he is second on the list with 16 in his LFC career.  Top spot, however, is taken by Gordon Hodgson who scored 17 hat-tricks for Liverpool between 1925 and 1936.
