Few away trips have been kinder to Liverpool than the run up to Tyneside. St James’ Park can be one of the most hostile grounds in England, yet the Reds have quietly turned it into one of their most productive away days of the Premier League era, which is worth bearing in mind before you glance at the Newcastle v Liverpool odds. The full history, though, is more finely balanced than the last decade suggests.
Liverpool’s overall record on Tyneside
Newcastle have been Premier League members in all but three seasons since 1992, and Liverpool have made 31 league visits to St James’ Park in that time. Their record there reads 13 wins, eight draws and 10 defeats: positive, but hardly the procession the recent run implies.
That is because the story splits neatly in two. Liverpool lost on Tyneside with uncomfortable regularity through the 1990s and 2000s, when Newcastle were a genuine top-four side. Their most recent defeat there was a 2-0 loss in December 2015. Since then they have gone nine consecutive visits unbeaten, winning six and drawing three, a club-record sequence at the ground.
The biggest win at St James’ Park
Nothing comes close to 27 April 2013. Liverpool won 6-0, with Daniel Agger heading in after three minutes, Jordan Henderson scoring on 17 and again on 76, Daniel Sturridge striking twice in six second-half minutes and Fabio Borini adding a sixth. It remains Liverpool’s record victory at the stadium and Newcastle’s heaviest home defeat in Premier League history.
February 2023 deserves a mention too. Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo scored inside the opening 17 minutes, goalkeeper Nick Pope was sent off on 22 for handling outside his area, and Newcastle’s 17-match unbeaten league run was effectively over by half-time.
Memorable games on Tyneside
May 2019 is the one most supporters reach for. Chasing Manchester City to the wire, Liverpool were twice pegged back before Divock Origi headed an 86th-minute winner in a 3-2 victory, all after Mohamed Salah had been carried off following a collision with the post.

July 2020 offered different drama. Dwight Gayle put Newcastle ahead inside 26 seconds, the fastest goal ever scored on a Premier League final day, before Virgil van Dijk, Origi and Sadio Mane completed a 3-1 win for the newly crowned champions.
August 2023 was the most improbable. Van Dijk was sent off after 28 minutes and Anthony Gordon put Newcastle in front, only for Nunez to come off the bench and score twice in the closing ten minutes. Two years later Liverpool led 2-0 through Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike, saw a ten-man Newcastle claw it back to 2-2, then watched 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha win it in the 100th minute on his league debut.
There is a pattern. Liverpool’s 12 comeback wins against Newcastle are the most by any side against another in Premier League history, and plenty have been earned on Tyneside.
Liverpool players with good records at the ground
Mohamed Salah has been a persistent problem for Newcastle at home, scoring in that 3-2 win of 2019 and later producing a second-half double plus an assist in the 3-3 draw of December 2024.
Darwin Nunez managed three goals in only two visits. Henderson and Sturridge each scored twice on the same afternoon in 2013, while Origi’s late interventions in 2019 and 2020 made him an unlikely Tyneside specialist.
Where St James’ Park ranks among Liverpool’s favourite away days
Club statisticians have long listed St James’ Park as the away ground where Liverpool have scored the most Premier League goals, and three high-scoring visits in a row have pushed that tally past 50. Set against a venue like Old Trafford, where Liverpool have lost considerably more Premier League matches than they have won, Tyneside looks positively hospitable.
Add in the fact that Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 19 Premier League meetings with Newcastle overall, winning 14 and drawing five, and it is easy to see why the Premier League odds rarely favour the hosts. The caveat is worth stating, though: ten Liverpool defeats in 31 visits is proof that this away day has been earned rather than gifted.
