The Reds have finally made a signing! Uruguay international defender Ronald Araújo on a season-long loan from Barcelona, where he had been club captain. The 27-year-old, who can also play at right-back, has taken a pay cut to join Liverpool, with the deal including an option to make the move permanent for £47.1 million, or around €55 million.
The Reds will be covering his wages for the loan period. The move addresses an immediate problem in Andoni Iraola’s defence following Ibrahima Konaté’s free transfer to Real Madrid this summer and comes after the new head coach spoke to the player by phone to sanction the deal.
Filling a Defensive Role
Liverpool have been left short at the back, with Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni all injured and new signing Jeremy Jacquet yet to feature in pre-season because of a knee issue. Virgil van Dijk was the Reds’ only fit senior centre-back before Araújo’s arrival and he’s not getting any younger. At six foot four inches, Araújo offers pace and a physical presence in both boxes, whilst his versatility adds further cover in defence. He will wear the number 33 shirt and joins a group of younger defensive options that Liverpool are building around for the longer term.

Araújo joined Barcelona from Uruguayan club Boston River in 2018 and went on to make more than 200 appearances, winning three La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies. He was given the captaincy in the January of 2026 following Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s loan departure, but started only 11 league games last season as Hansi Flick preferred the pairing of Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin. His final campaign at the Nou Camp was disrupted by a red card in a Champions League defeat by Chelsea in the December of 2025, after which he was given a leave of absence to prioritise his mental health.
He later told Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo that he had experienced anxiety for 18 months that developed into depression. Araújo returned to training in January and scored on his first start back the following month, in a Copa del Rey win at Albacete. Hopefully, given what the squad has been through over the past 12 months or so, he will be in exactly the right place to get his head sorted. His signing alone isn’t enough, but hopefully it’s a step in the right direction.
