Liverpool Agree New British Transfer Record Fee To Land Isak

After already breaking the British transfer record this summer in what has been an unprecedented level of spending for the Reds, Liverpool have now agreed a deal to eclipse this after agreeing a £125 million deal with Newcastle United for Alexander Isak.

In what has arguably been the summer’s longest-running transfer saga, from around July onwards it became more of a case of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ this move would happen.

The club’s first signing of the transfer window was of course for Florian Wirtz, after the club brought him in for £116 million.

Earlier in the year, Isak emerged as what many understood to be an “unrealistic” summer target for Liverpool, though as the season ended, rumours about his future began to gather pace.

Further questions were raised after he missed the game against Celtic in pre-season due to “injury” and then the situation was exacerbated when he was left out of the club’s squad for their summer tour. After a period of silence, Isak then made his position untenable, stating on social media that Newcastle had broken promises and alienated fans.

Isak To Add Quality To Reds Regardless

While some Liverpool fans may have some slight concerns about how the player went about getting this move, there is no doubt about Isak’s ability.

With Isak’s arrival, the club will now have arguably the best attacking force in Europe. To sign Wirtz and then follow this up with signing the hugely exciting talent of Hugo Ekitike for £69 million (plus £10 million in add-ons), and now Isak, means it is one of the best recruitment campaigns in one transfer window of any club in years.

Of course, when you throw Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and even Federico Chiesa (who has had somewhat of a revival), into the mix as well, this gives manager Arne Slot a formidable crop of offensive players.

No doubt many fans will be hoping that Slot finds a way to fit Isak, Ekitike, Wirtz and Salah into the same starting lineup. The primary conundrum the Dutchman will have is who he plays on the left.

At Eintracht Frankfurt, Ekitike was highly effective in that position, prior to Omar Marmoush’s move to Manchester City, though he stepped up superbly to the lone striker role. Isak is also very capable playing in both positions. Salah slots seamlessly into his favoured berth on the right, while Wirtz can make the central attacking midfield position his own.

Should Fans Have Any Concerns?

One slight issue that fans might have is that with this abundance of talent up front, the team might be too unbalanced. In the first couple of games, Liverpool have looked too open at the back and a quality reinforcement in central defence appears to have been earmarked.

Marc Guehi is another who has been tracked by Liverpool all summer – another player who is one of the best in the world in his position and we may see him arrive from Crystal Palace before the transfer window closes. All in all, this would make for a very good summer for Liverpool, though, the pressure will now be on for the club to deliver trophies.

Liverpool Miss Out on Guehí as he Signs for Man City

Liverpool need cover in defence. There can be no real argument against that, when you consider the fact that we have three senior centre-backs and one of them is Joe Gomez, whose time at Anfield has been plagued by injuries. When Ibrahima Konaté’s form fell through the floor earlier in the season, Arne Slot had […]
