It is often a criticism of football that it has become a global sport. The biggest teams in the world want to be as popular in the United States of America, China and South Africa as they do in the cities and towns in which they are based. The result of this is that some football clubs can lose their identity and become something of a ‘plastic’ club.
One of the ways in which people from further afield can still feel part of the overall experience of supporting a club is thanks to fan media, with The Anfield Wrap having been at the forefront of this since its launch. The question is, what is it?
From the Heart of the City
The Anfield Wrap has been about telling the story of Liverpool Football Club from the moment that it first launched as a podcast. Whereas the likes of Arsenal Fan TV and Mark Goldbridge have been about using controversy in order to generate clicks, likes and shares, TAW, as the group is often referred to, simply looks to give genuine reactions to what the club that it is based around have been up to. Boasting offices at Mann Island, close to the Liver Building, they are able to represent the thoughts and feelings of Liverpool supporters directly from the heart of the city.

That isn’t to say that everyone that contributes to The Anfield Wrap is from Liverpool. In some ways, the joy of the experience of listening to TAW shows is that the voices that you will hear are many and varied, albeit with a Scouse heartbeat. There are contributors from as close as the Wirral and as far away as the US. The thing that those that contribute have in common is the fact that they understand the Scouse sensibility. You don’t need to come from Liverpool in order to understand the things that matter to the people of the city, doing things the right way as a result.
What to Expect
The Anfield Wrap boasts both free shows and those that are part of a subscription service. That means that you can choose to only listen to the shows that go out for free, bolstered by partnership agreements with the likes of Nord VPN, Nivea and Erdinger, or you can opt to spend money in order to support the work that they do. If you want to do the latter, then you can either pay £7 for audio shows, £7 for video or £10 for both. If you do that, you are likely to get around ten to 15 shows per week to listen to and watch, covering a myriad of different topics that are diverse in range.
The Anfield Wrap have zero shame.

Obviously, Liverpool Football Club is always at the forefront of the work produced by TAW, but they work hard to ensure that numerous different topics are also covered in detail. There are shows such as What Football Means to Me, for example, in which guests are invited to explain how they came to follow their football club in the first place and how their relationship has developed over the years. Is it Worth It?
Coming in at £10 a month for both podcast and video shows, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to ask whether it’s worth it or not. Obviously, you will need to decide for yourself whether you can afford that sort of money, but there is no better way of getting a sense of what supporters think and feel about a topic than by hearing from them directly. In The Anfield Wrap, you have an award-winning podcast with any number of different voices that can help you understand not only how people are reacting to any given situation but also what it means to support the club if you are from outside the area.
The people involved with TAW work hard to ensure that there are numerous points of view put across, so this isn’t just a podcast and video series from white men. Equally, there is also a show that looks ahead to the weekend’s actions and speaks to supporters from clubs involved in the Premier League action, meaning that it is a good way to be educated about how a club is likely to perform, which players to look out for and what the fans of opposition teams are thinking and feeling ahead of a big match. The fact that The Anfield Wrap has an incredibly loyal following speaks volumes.
