Top 5 Best Liverpool Players In History

Without a doubt, Liverpool is one of the titans of English and even European football. The number of European titles the club has won, speaks for themselves. Two Champions League’s and four European Cups (old format), making the club one of the most successful in history.

Of course, none of these would have been possible without the players that have played at the club over the decades and, while every fan young and old will have their own opinions about who the club’s best five players have been, we’re trying to look at this from a balanced perspective.

As such, below, you will find a lowdown of our top five that have played at the club based on the impact that they have had.

Kenny Dalglish

kenny_dalglishAh, Sir Kenny. Beloved by the club and everyone associated, Dalglish would later go on to manage the Reds. Revered as ‘King Kenny’, the forward played 515 games for Liverpool between 1977 and 1990 scoring 172 goals.

Known for his elegance on the pitch, he helped the club win six league titles and three European cups, including a league and cup double in 1986 when he transitioned into the role of player-manager.

A symbol of the club’s ‘golden era’, Dalglish played the game with elegance and vision, though could more than deliver in big moments. Still massively involved in the club, he also led tributes following the tragic death of Diogo Jota.

Steven Gerrard

Mr ‘Captain Fantastic’, while Gerrard didn’t win as much silverware as others on this list – famously being at fault for costing the club the title when he slipped against Chelsea, Gerrard epitomised the club’s ‘never say die’ attitude.

He essentially single-handedly was the main inspiration behind the club’s Champions League success in 2005 as Liverpool came from behind, trailing 3-0 against AC Milan at half-time to inspire a famous victory.

A year later, his man-of-the-match performance in the FA Cup final against West Ham United where he scored one of the best goals in the tournament’s history has helped to cement his place in the club’s folklore.

Mohammed Salah

Perhaps unlucky to rank as number three in this list – the Egyptian forward has won everything with the Reds in what has been one of the best eras in the club’s history. For the last five years, he has been the club’s top-scorer and has won numerous Premier League Golden Boots awards.

Having signed a new two-year contract as of spring 2025, there is still so much more that he can win at the club which could elevate him further.

Who knows how many more titles he will win, but you can be sure to find great odds on this market with sports betting on Betiton where you may even be tempted to have a flutter on Liverpool as well.

Ian Rush

Arguably one of the club’s best strikers of the nineties among so much competition, ‘Rushy’ helped the club to win five league titles, two European Cups and three FA Cups. Boasting his iconic mustache, he scored a club record 346 goals in 660 appearances.

One of the most feared forwards in England, Rush had a predatory instinct in front of goal and was responsible for many big moments in games.

Billy Liddell

Perhaps one from left-field here, the winger/forward carried the club in the less successful post-WW II era during a difficult time. He was that influential, the Reds were even nicknamed ‘Liddellpool’ during his playing days between 1938 and 1961 – incredible longevity, while he scored 228 goals in 534 appearances.

YNWA Meaning

Any time that opposition supporters turn up at Anfield in order to watch their team take on Liverpool Football Club, they will be treated to a rendition of the club’s anthem prior to kick-off. The home fans know it well enough to refer to it simply as ‘YNWA’, often doing so in the likes of […]
