Following a – let’s face it, perhaps, surprising Premier League title win last season – especially considering the departure of Jurgen Klopp and not really any signings last summer, we’re definitely intrigued as to how the Red will perform next term.
Though, they have started the summer impressively, making three major splashes in the transfer market so far, replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold with Bayer Leverkusen’s highly talented Jeremie Frimpong who could well be considered better than his predecessor.
Teammate Florian Wirtz then followed from the Bundesliga in a move that has broken the British transfer record to add another edge to the Reds’ attack. Having also secured Mohamed Salah for another two seasons, who, despite being the wrong side of 30, looks to be in his prime – this could well be a very dangerous side next term.
Finally, a Kerkez fee was agreed well in advance of pre-season, showing the reds are getting their business done early again so they can focus on the upcoming campaign. It may not be the end of the signing either with links to Crystal Palace and England centre back Marc Guéhi and Newcastle’s Iask both strongly linked. It would be a surprise to see Liverpool get all five given the outlay needed and a frugal history but if they do it will be a serious sign of intent.
What Is A Realistic Aim?
No doubt, fans will be hungry for more trophies, especially after their sensational season and we may well see this happen.
They would have been disappointed to come up short in the Champions League against eventual tournament winners, PSG on penalties at Anfield and will certainly want to progress further next term – particularly having only lost one game pre-knockout (their last match in which they played a second-string).
No doubt, they will strengthen further in the summer and this should aid their quest for a second Champions League title in seven years, though they are bound to have some strong competition.
Real Madrid will no doubt, be strong – PSG finally look the business and Barcelona will only get better. Despite this, the Reds could have good-value odds and there are a lot of respectable football bookmakers so maybe the Reds could be worth a punt.
Meanwhile, fans may like another trip to Wembley. They lost out to Newcastle United in the League Cup final last term, though it was a period where games had come thick and fast, while they were still challenging on all fronts.
Another FA Cup win could well be the perfect tonic, though there could be some stiff competition – as we saw last season, there are several ‘outsiders’ who make great cup teams, after Crystal Palace triumphed over Manchester City.
Ultimately, it is fair to say the club will be title challengers again, especially based on their business so far, though it could make for an intriguing season.
Manchester City have wasted no time in bringing quality players in ahead of the Club World Cup, Chelsea will strengthen, Arsenal will be desperate to finally win the title and both Manchester United and Tottenham will be eager to drastically improve.
Next term looks like it could be the most competitive yet if this summer’s transfer window is to go on and the business that could yet done, though so far, Liverpool fans will be quietly confident that the club can build on last season.
