Anfield Moves The Earth As Liverpool Rampage To Title In Style

It was really only academic to be honest wasn’t it? I mean, having already beaten Tottenham this season 6-3 and away from home, it was probably pretty obvious that they would do it at home in a game that would guarantee them the Premier League title.

But, we expected this, probably as far back as December and, we all know what Anfield is like when the fans get going. Probably one of the most spine-tingling grounds in the country for atmosphere – even to be in the stands. I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like for the players.

Especially pre-match during the rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, when the volume really turns up.

However, there were numerous moments during the side’s 5-1 title-winning victory over Spurs when Liverpool celebrations smashed the sound barrier!

How The Richter Scale Was Moved

Recorded by the University of Liverpool earth scientists, they used specialised equipment that is used to detect earthquakes and it appears that during the game, Anfield’s raucous crowd obliged.

The peak moment during the game came following Alexis MacAllister’s goal in the 24th minute which put Liverpool ahead and set them on course for the title, with celebrations for his strike registering 1.74 on the Richter scale.

Meanwhile, the second largest tremor came after Mo Salah’s strike in front of the Kop which measured 1.60, while Cody Gakpo’s goal hit 1.03 and Destiny Udogie’s own goal was 1.35 on the scale.

Quite literally packed to the rafters, Anfield’s 60,415 attendance was instrumental during the game, though a minority must have feared the worst, following Spurs’ 12th minute opener. Though, the away side’s lead lasted just four minutes, with the noise levels around the stadium, clearly key to prompting a Luis Diaz equaliser.

When Anfield Set The Noise Record

Luis_Garcia

Liverpool and Anfield are no strangers to bearing witness to events that are similar to these. Back in the infamous 2005 Champions League semi-final against Chelsea, Luis Garcia’s ‘ghost goal’ was responsible for causing a noise level of 130 decibels – similar to that of a jet engine taking off. Wow, I’m just imagining what it must have been like outside the stadium after that went in!

While exact noise level figures aren’t available, there were seemingly a couple of times during Liverpool’s extraordinary 4-0 comeback against Barcelona in the Champions League when the noise levels hit significant heights.

Anfield, with its famous ‘kop’ end has always been one of the loudest and most intimidating stadiums for opponents – comparable to that of Borussia Dortmund’s ground, the Westfalenstadion, with the team’s own version of the ‘kop’, called ‘the yellow wall’.

It is likely, Anfield will continue to break records with sound levels – especially for Champions League nights, rivalries and FA Cup games!

The Anfield safe standing rail seating has been a success so far

One of the things that Liverpool supporters know better than most is that standing isn’t safe at a football ground. The Hillsborough Disaster indelibly changed the face of football in the United Kingdom, turning stadiums around the country into all-seater affairs. In recent years, however, the idea of ‘safe standing’ has been introduced, with Anfield […]

Is the Anfield Kop still as special as it once was?

The Kop has always been considered to be one of the best stands in world football. Although it wasn’t the first Kop in England, with one at Woolwich Arsenal’s Manor Ground taking that honour, there is little question that it became the most famous. It was the one at Anfield that was first labelled to […]
