Players Staying Home Before Matches – The True Secret Behind Liverpool’s Success This Season

It was perhaps somewhat of a surprise to many when after just a couple of months it looked as though there would be no hangover effect of new Liverpool manager, Arne Slot taking charge of the club, with the Reds storming to the top of the Premier League.

What did seem to be the general consensus was the club wouldn’t necessarily struggle – top four appeared to be a realistic aim for this season, though the way Liverpool have performed and how Slot has got the best out of, essentially the same squad of players from last season has essentially exceeded everyone’s expectations.

Currently top of the Premier League by a significant (at this stage of the season) margin, and, by no accident either, they have been playing easily the best football of possibly any club in Europe and look the team they were under ex-boss Jurgen Klopp a few seasons ago.

While Slot’s Liverpool play a slightly different brand of football, with a more balanced approach, this is paying dividends and, until very recently, looked like they could go all the way in every competition. Somewhat of an anomaly came via a 1-0 defeat away at Plymouth in the FA Cup fourth round, with Slot partially rotating his squad.

To many observers it would suggest that there has been a significant change of tactics – even heavy recruitment, or even training methods, though this has pretty much stayed the same, bar some minor tweaks.

What Slot has done though, is incorporate some of his own philosophies onto the squad that are more to do with aesthetics and routine than anything else, though it does suggest that these have been what could be called a difference-maker.

Slot Incorporates A Key Change For Player Rest

No, this is not Alisson 🙂

Albeit subtle, Slot appears to have been substantially detail-oriented in terms of the changes and one that recently caught the media’s attention is that he likes his player’s to feel comfortable.

One of these involved allowing players to stay in their homes the night before a home match, instead of a hotel.

Slot recently revealed: “People that have more knowledge about this than me tell me that you always sleep better in your own bed than a hotel bed. And sleep is a very important part of getting the best possible performance.”

Without a doubt, sleep is one of the most important factors for anyone, though especially footballers to ensure peak performance and there are just so many options out there now, with bed manufacturers embracing the latest in technology – SIMBA king mattress toppers, for example being just one of many that are effective.

It appears that this change has been a contributing factor to the club’s success over the course of the season, with just small tweaks like this making a difference. Other changes include making sure his players have more balance in their life, with an emphasis on being able to spend time with their families.

Clearly, this is translating into results on the pitch – players have a smile on their faces, their body language is positive and the mood within the squad is good. Perhaps the question is, how long will this continue?

It has been a dog of a campaign. The good […]

Liverpool FC Potential January 2026 Transfers

Liverpool have endured a tough time of it in the Premier League and Champions League so far this season, also crashing out of the League Cup. It is, in my opinion, entirely understandable why that might be the case, given the fact that this is a club that has been grieving the loss of a […]
