According to the bookmakers, it is now more likely that Liverpool will one of either the Premier League or the Champions League than for them to win neither. In fact, with some bookies they are longer odds to win the English top-flight and the FA Cup than they are to do the double.
In other words, supporters of the Merseyside club would be well within their rights to be disappointed if they were to end the season without any major silverware to celebrate; a remarkable position for them to be in considering how most people thought things would go when Jürgen Klopp decided to depart Anfield in the summer.
Well-Placed in the Premier League
Those who are long enough in the tooth will know exactly how unpredictable the Premier League can be, even when it seems as though it is a lock for one team to win it at the expense of all others. One bookmaker made the choice to pay out early on a Manchester United title not once but twice, seeing the Red Devils let them down both times.
Even some Liverpool fans will be able to remember the year that the First Division title was all but sewn up, provided they didn’t lose to Arsenal by two or more goals on the last day of the season, only for them to do exactly that. No one in Red will be popping the champagne corks just yet.

The truth of the matter is, though, that the early season form of the Merseyside club is such that they have put themselves in a remarkably good position to end up as English champions for the second time in the Premier League era. Heading into the home game against Fulham, they were in a position whereby they could drop 17 points over the remainder of the campaign and still reach 90 points, whereas Chelsea could only drop 10, Arsenal 8 and Manchester City just 6.
The job that Arne Slot has done so far has been remarkable, with the underlying numbers suggesting that this isn’t just a flash in the pan.
Top of the Champions League Pile
When the final whistle went on Liverpool’s game away to Girona, the result meant that the Reds had won all six of their games of the new Swiss-system Champions League.
They sat at the top of the table, having already beaten the team in second at the time, Bayer Leverkusen, 4-0 at Anfield. The group stage isn’t over yet, but Liverpool supporters will remember when the club won every game of their 2021-2022 Champions League group and, more importantly, what happened next. They made it all the way to the final, only to lose to Real Madrid thanks to an inspired goalkeeping performance from Thibaut Courtois and a goal by Vinícius Junior.
Although the Merseyside club has already beaten the Spanish giants once this season, no one will be taking for granted the idea of beating them again if they face them later in the competition, given the hex that Carlo Ancelotti’s men seem to have over Liverpool.
