Clash of Liverpool Captains and Targets for the Midfield

International Football

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been named the new captain of the Netherlands National team. The European giants failed to qualify for the World Cup which is being played in Russia this summer. Danny Blind and Dick Advocaat struggled to reincarnate the type of football we’ve seen by former Netherlands teams and missed out on that qualifying spot for Russia. Former Everton and Southampton manager Ronald Koeman took other in February and has decided Van Dijk would be his perfect skipper.

With Holland playing tonight against the England National team, Van Dijk could be going head to head with a few of his Liverpool teammates. Jordan Henderson is set to take the captaincy for the match. Joe Gomez could get the nod in a 3-man defence, whereas Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana may be looking at places on the bench.

Emre Can looks to have made a decision about his future. The German midfielder stated in an interview this week that he has the qualities to play for a very big club, adding that he is doing well in England but the Spanish League is also attractive. Whether this means Can will be staying at Liverpool or not is difficult to tell, but fans have called for the 24-year-old to never play for the club again after his belittling comments made about the club.

Italian midfielder Jorginho has been linked to the club as a replacement for Can, but with interest from Arsenal and also Manchester United, Liverpool may have to pay big money to sign the Napoli midfielder.

Another target of Liverpool’s is Schalke playmaker Max Meyer. The German international has had contract problems, just like Can, at Schalke. The 22-year-old sees his contract run out in June, and once again, Liverpool and Arsenal seem to be the favourites for the players signature.
