More breaking news:
Liverpool have agreed a fee with Chelsea for sudden wantaway midfielder Raul Meireles.
Thats a pity as I rate the Portuguese midfielder very highly.
But if he wants to join up with Villas-Boas then good luck to him.

Liverpool FC have just announced that Craig Bellamy is now a Liverpool player.

MEIRELES HANDS IN TRANSFER REQUEST
Breaking news is that Raul Meireles has handed in a written transfer request to Liverpool Fc.
It is now 10:30pm and with just a half an hour left to go in the Summer transfer window, this comes as a sudden and major surprise.
His head must have been turned by the rumours coming out of Chelsea the past week.
Sad to see it happen but I think he has left it too late, more to follow...

BELLAMY HAVING MEDICAL AT LIVERPOOL
Man City outcast Craig Bellamy is close to signing for Liverpool on a free tranfer.
The talented Welshman is currently undergoing a medical at Melwood, which should, hopefully be a formality.
It was clear from last week that a Liverpool move for bad-boy Bellamy would happen. The player himself had said that a return to Liverpool would be "a dream come true."
Lets hope the two clubs can agree on a deal for Bellars as Kenny gets rid of the deadwood in the squad and adds the final piece of the jigsaw.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have confirmed the completion of the transfer of David N'gog to Bolton in a £4 million deal.

LIVERPOOL MAY SELL MEIRELES TO CHELSEA
It seems that Liverpool may be willing to sell star-player Raul Meireles.
The gifted Portuguese midfielder may be available for £11 million.
Chelsea have had an initial bid of £8 million plus Yossi Benayoun rejected by the reds as they do not wish to sell him to a Premier League rival.
However, Andreas Villa-Boas is a keen admirer of his fellow countryman and is desperate to bring him to Chelsea.
I hope this does not happen as Meireles is a very good player for Liverpool, his attacking play from midfield has unlocked many defences since he joined us from FC Porto last season.
He links up very well with Suarez, Kuyt and Maxi to create and score many goals for Liverpool.
I hope he stays at Anfield, despite the daft hair-do's, he is a quality player.
What do you think?
Should we keep the man or sell him?

ESPANYOL OFFER POULSON A WAY OUT OF LIVERPOOL
Espanyol offer Liverpool misfit an escape route:
According to The Mirror,
Liverpool misfit Christian Poulson is wanted on loan by Spanish side Espanyol.
Poulson was dropped from the Danish squad earlier this week because of a lack of match action at Anfield. And Espanyol are ready to give him a chance to get some games by solving their problem position at the heart of their midfield.
Poulson was signed up by Roy Hodgson from Juventus a year ago but has spent most of his time on the sidelines.
Kenny Dalglish has made it clear the midfielder has no part in his plans and the Reds would be happy to get his wages off their books before the transfer window closes.
Poulson, 31, has a good reputation in Spain having helped Seville win the Uefa Cup in 2007.
Somehow, it just has not worked out for the Dane at Anfield, since being signed by Roy Hodgson last year, when played he has always looked slow and off the pace of play.
I would let Poulsen go on a free-transfer as we just want to see him move on to another club with the minimum fuss.
The squad revamping continues apace under Kenny and Comolli.

CRAIG BELLAMY ON THE VERGE OF A RETURN TO ANFIELD
Craig Bellamy looks to be returning to Liverpool from Man City on a free-transfer.
The talented Welsh striker, now aged 32, is reported across the media in saying that returning to Liverpool again as "A dream come true."
The only stumbling block appears to be his remaining one year's contract at Man City where his incredible £95,000 a week wages need to be paid by one or other of the clubs concerned.
It appears unlikely that Liverpool have the ability to stump-up the £4.5 million needed to release the wily Welshman from his contract.
Instead, David Comolli and Liverpool are negotiating with the Eastlanders for a mutualy agreeable conclusion to a deal whereby Bellamy can join Liverpool on a free-transfer with clauses built into the deal, should it happen.
Signed by Rafa Benitez in 2005/06, Bellamy made a big impression both on and off the pitch.
I would love to see him back at our club as, apart from Louis Suarez, we have no real pace upfront and Bellamy gives you that in spades as well as his tireless running, unselfish passing and infectious enthusiasm.
I would love to see him back at Anfield.

ANYONE GOT A GOOD HOME FOR THIS OLD JOE?
Joe Cole is at a very big crossroads in his football career.
The 29 year old Liverpool midfielder has not had a good 12 months at Anfield.
Sent off on the first day of last season's opening game against Arsenal, he has struggled to make an impression in the team ever since.
Signed on a free from Chelsea by Christian Purslow (idiot) and Roy Hodgson, the England International has failed to get game-time under Kenny Dalglish since January.
Indeed, Cole is believed to be one of many players at Liverpool who are deemed to now be surplus to requirements at the club.
The mystifying thing is that nobody has come in with an offer for the player who is quality.
Last season, Harry Rednapp really wanted the guy but lost out to Liverpool's offer of £90,000 a week wages and the prospect for Joe Cole of playing for a club steeped in a successful history.
Sadly, for Joe and Liverpool, it has not worked out and the man is now one of many players the club is hoping to move on out.
The problem is, nobody seems to want him.
With only 7 days left in the transfer window, offers have, so far, been thin on the ground.
Motormouth QPR boss Neal Warnock has casually said that he would love to take Cole to Lofus Road and that he could afford 40% of his wages.
I treat these remarks with the contempt they deserve, as befits anything Warnock has to say.
It is rumoured that Harry Rednapp is willing to make a bid for the unfortunate Cole, I hope a deal is done with Spurs for our player,
or any other team who is serious about signing him.
Best of luck Joe.

SOTO GONE TO WOLFSBURG
Liverpool's no-nonsense defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos has moved to Wolfsburg in a two-year deal.
The towering greek defender leaves Anfield on a free transfer as the Liverpool clearout begins.
The popular defender who was signed from AEK Athens by former Manager, Rafa Benitez as a then replacement for Sammi Hypia.
Soto endeared himself to Liverpool fans with his rugged, battling displays, but he is deemed to be surplus to Kenny Dalglish's requirements.
I thought he would be playing against Exeter in the Carling Cup on Wednesday!
Maybe this will allow Liverpool room to go after Gary Cahill or Scott Dann.

REMEMBERING OUR PAST: JOHN MCKENNA
An important and unique event will take place in Glaslough, Co Monaghan, Ireland at 6pm on August 20th 2011.
Its a commemoration event to honor one of the most important football men of his generation.
John McKenna was born to Patrick McKenna and Jane McCrudden in the parish of Donagh on January 3rd 1855.
John went on to become the first ever manager of Liverpool Football Club and was also The Football League President for 26 years.
With the support of the Heritage section of Monaghan County Council and other interested parties David Moen and other John McKenna followers are organising a number of events, including the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to John McKenna.
Representatives of Liverpool FC, The Football League. Everton FC and the Football Association of Ireland will attend.
Glaslough – 6pm – 20th August 2011.
However, it was McKenna who seemed to be more involved with team affairs and he could not have had a better start to his new career, beating Rotherham Town 7-1 in a friendly in our first ever match on home turf on September 1, 1892.
Due to his trips north of the border to acquire players, the first team he fielded, had no Englishmen. They were known as the team of 'Macs', with McBride, McQueen and McVean to name but a few.
At the end of the first season, McKenna - also acting as secretary to the club - had written to the FA without anyone's knowledge, and requested election to the Football league.
McKenna's vision for the club was now apparent. Due to the old test match system, and no automatic promotion, Liverpool found themselves in a play-off situation with last placed Newton Heath (Manchester United).
They eased to a 2-0 victory and in doing so finally achieved First Division status.
Despite relegation in 1895, Liverpool became known for their fighting spirit and began to flourish.
In 1915, McKenna handed over the chairmanship to WR Williams, but remained at the helm. By this time, McKenna had become a well respected figure in football.
After serving Liverpool for over 40 years, 'Honest' John McKenna died in March of 1936.
Like John Houlding, his friend and business partner before him, his coffin was carried through the city by three Liverpool players and three Everton players and a commemorative plaque to him remains in the foyer in Anfield.
Lets hope his spirit lives with us to a victory v Arsenal today.

NOW IS OUR BEST CHANCE TO BEAT ARSENAL
Liverpool face Arsenal on Saturday at noon not having beaten the Gunners in seven straight attempts.
In fact the last time Arsene Wenger's men tasted defeat to Liverpool was in a Champion's League match in 2008 under Rafa Benitez winning by 4 goals to 2.
Since then, Liverpool have played Arsenal seven times, drawing four and losing three, bad reading isn't it.
However, with the London club having lost Fabregas to Barca and Clichy to Man City and with Eboue and Nasri also set to quit the club, it is fair to assume that its a good time to play them at the Emirates on Saturday.
I watched them beat Udinese 1-0 and they did not look too impressive, in fact I think we have the beating of them.
With our new recruits of Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Enrique along with Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll and, hopefully, Aquilani playing, then we stand a very good chance of defeating the Arsenal at the weekend. ©

CESC FABREGAS IS NOW ON A PLANE TO BARCELONA
Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas is due to become a Barcelona player in the morning.
The Spanish midfielder is in the air, as we speak, after Arsenal and Barcelona agreed terms for the player for £30 million (approx).
Arsene Wenger was understandly reluctant to lose his star player, but he has finally given into the inevitable and has allowed Fabregas to rejoin his boyhood club.
Some would say, that Arsenal acted illegally at the time, they bought him on the cheap as an under-age player from Barca and now they stand to make a £30 million plus profit on the very talented midfielder.
Its good news for Liverpool as we face the gunners in the League on Saturday.

NEW LOOK LIVERPOOL STILL FINDING ITS FEET
Liverpool's first match of the 2011/12 Premier League got off to a decent start.
With the debuts of Charlie Adam, Jordan Hendersen, Stewart Downing and José Enrique all starting together for the first time in a Premier game, there was bound to be some rustiness and lethargy amongst Kenny Daglish's team.
Liverpool opened the game with some great passing and movement and it resulted in an early penalty for Luis Suarez which he missed.
Suarez atoned for his error by glancing in a Charlie Adam free-kick on 13 mins and the Reds looked set for a rout.
Andy Carroll was very harshly judged to have commited a foul when he scored a perfectly good goal on half an hour .
I loved the way the Liverpool team set about Sunderland in the 1st half, keeping the ball, setting up chances and taking shots on goal,
it bodes well for the coming season.
The ex-Man Utd player Steve Bruce obviously had a go at his Sunderland team at half-time and it worked as they nullified every Liverpool attack in the second-half, they were like men possessed in the and it was no suprise when they equalised though Larsson on 57 mins due to poor marking all around, notably young John Flanagan.
It wasn't entirely his fault as the cross should never have come in, in the first place.
So we open our new Campaign ending in a draw, but I am very optimistic for the season ahead

LIVERPOOL STARS BACK EARLY AFTER ENGLAND MATCH IS CANCELLED
With the ongoing disturbances throughout London and other parts of England, the FA announced the abandonment of the England v Holland International match which was due to be be played at Wembley Stadium this evening.
In a way, its a blessing in disguise, as most of Liverpool's stars have now returned to Melwood to resume training ahead of Saturday's opening Premier League fixture at home to Sunderland.
Stewart Downing, Andy Carroll and Dirk Kuyt will now benefit from the lack of an International match three days before the start of the Premier League.
They will join up with signing of last season, Luis Suarez, who returned to Liverpool on Monday, in training and ready to play for the team.
Anarchy In The Uk, lets hope it all calms down and life gets back to something like normality soon.

GET OVER IT FERNANDO TORRES
Fernando Torres is back at it again.
Six months after leaving Liverpool in a wave of acrimony, the beleagured Chelsea striker persists in sticking the knife in on his old team;
“Liverpool’s future isn’t looking bright,” he said.
“I always gave them a 100%, but it was a difficult situation.
Even though I felt like I was a big part of the club, you have to also look after your personal ambitions.
“For me, that is winning trophies and unfortunately that doesn’t look like a possibility for them.Even though I felt like I was a big part of the club, you have to also look after your personal ambitions.
“It’s no coincidence that Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano and myself all left Liverpool. It was always about ambitions.
I played for Liverpool for a few years and had some great moments.
“But when a club like Chelsea, with bigger potential, come calling, it’s hard to say no especially when it looked impossible to win the League for Liverpool.”
Talk about sour grapes, jeez Torres we adored you at Anfield.
Yes things were very bad under Woy Hodgson, but everyone from Jamie to Stevie and many others put a shift in, even though they knew he was the wrong man for the job, they toughed it out.
The Liverpool players, unlike yourself, did their best and with the return of Kenny Dalglish, we will make serious progress this season.
You haven't exactly made great progress since leaving Liverpool,
sorry about burning your shirt, too bad, stuff happens.
You did play really well for us for two years, thanks for that and
thanks for the £50 million quid which we made good use of.
So stop having a go at Liverpool FC and concentrate on your new club Chelsea.

JOSE ENRIQUE TO JOIN THE REDS ON THURSDAY
News emerging tonight is that Newcastle have agreed to let Liverpool sign their Spanish full-back, José Enrique in a deal costing between £5 and £10 million.
Depending on which paper you believe, The Mirror suggests £5 million while the Daily Mail says the deal is worth £10 million.
Either way, if we get to sign the experienced defender, it will shore up a long-standing problem in our team.
I believe we will get our man for around £6 million.
He is due at Liverpool within the next 48 hours to have a medical and agree personal terms.
A bit of solidity at left-back and another Spaniard to keep Reina company.
"If Everton were playing down the bottom of my garden, I'd draw the curtains."

AQUILANI STARS AGAIN IN LIVERPOOL DRAW
Liverpool 3 Valerenga 3
Liverpool's pre-season form continued to stutter as they were held to a draw by Norwegian outfit Valerenga.
Liverpool fielded their Summer signings Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam along with returning Pepe Reina, Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger.
Valerenga opened the scoring through Lars Iver-Strand on 14 mins, following some poor marking by Glen Johnson and Jamie Carragher.
The Norwegians doubled the lead minutes later when a very soft penalty was conceeded by Liverpool.
Fegor Ogude converted the spot-kick on 18 mins, despite Pepe Reina's best efforts, to leave it two-nil to the home side.
Luckily and deservedly Liverpool got a goal back close to half-time with an Andy Carroll goal on 42 mins from a Liverpool free-kick.
This gave Kenny Dalglish and Liverpool hope going into the 2nd half and Daniel Agger scored from a header and then a second with a goal-box shot for Liverpool to lead 3-2 in Norway.
At that stage, Aquilani had come on for Charlie Adam and he grabbed everyone's attention with his crisp passing, great corners and shots on goal.
A terrible amount of attention has been aimed towards Alberto Aquilani now that he is back playing for Liverpool, he is playing some great football for the Reds, even though he is the subject of constant rumour about him moving to Fiorentina and AC Milan.
Is he playing for his place in the Liverpool team or is he going back to Italy?
I hope he stays with us, Rafa saw his potential and took a risk on him, I think Kenny should do the same.
"The trouble with referees is that they know the rules, but they do not know the game."
