Rafa Benitez future is in fresh doubt tonight as it emerged that a board meeting is due next month to debate the Spaniard's tenure at Liverpool FC, according to Chris Bascombe in the News of the World.
The American owners have delegated responsibility to their five-man board, who will vote on Benitez's future before pre-season starts in July.
With Benitez rapidly losing support among the Kop hierarchy, his position is more vulnerable than ever.
Hicks and Gillett have one boardroom vote each and they've told managing director Christian Purslow they will respect a majority decision on Benitez's future.
Purslow, finance director Phil Nash and commercial director Ian Ayre can out-vote the Americans. Benitez is now fighting to keep his job in the hope his lucrative contract will shield him from the axe.
He met Purslow for clear-the-air talks earlier this week but emerged none the wiser as to whether his services will be retained.
The relationship between the pair has significantly deteriorated in recent months.
The Spanish boss has told colleagues he is yet to receive assurances significant resources will be available as the uncertainty over his role continues.
That's because it has yet to be decided if he'll be the one to splash any cash.
Liverpool are adamant there is around £15million in transfer funds for the manager.
Money raised through player sales can also be re-invested into the playing staff.
But it's inevitable recent events both on and off the pitch will heavily impact on funds.
The Merseysiders' coffers have taken a massive hit due to the failure to finish in the top four and there is no prospect of a mass influx of expensive signings.
It will only be possible to generate cash if the club's star players ask for a move, a prospect both the current manager and the board are adamant they will resist.
Benitez wants to raise funds by selling unwanted deadwood such as Albert Riera, but an exodus of more significant players can't be ruled out. Yossi Benayoun will go if Benitez stays. Javier Mascherano is the most likely superstar departure no matter who the manager.
Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard have already confirmed they will consider their futures after the World Cup but Liverpool are confident both can be convinced to stay.
The problem for Benitez if the duo decided to force a move is that Liverpool aren't sure if the Spanish coach is the right man to re-invest the funds their sales would generate.
In fact, it's more likely their sale would assist in paying off the manager's contract.
Liverpool are undertaking a thorough review of how Benitez has used the resources at his disposal and haven't looked favourably on the last four transfer windows.
He's argued throughout that time he's been forced to work with limited funds and has missed out on targets due to the actions of his employers.
Indeed, the list of players he believes he's missed out on grows by the week. But that's prompted a perplexed reaction within, the club pointing out every significant member of the current squad except Gerrard and Jamie Carragher was bought at Benitez's insistence at a value he agreed upon.
So the game might be up for Rafa, time will tell.

Benayoun moving to Chelsea
Yossi Benayoun is probably heading out of Liverpool.
The Blues have put in a £6 million bid for the Israeli attacker and it is expected that the deal will go through.
Benayoun said: “Ancelotti wants me for next season and now everything depends on Liverpool. Chelsea will have to pay some £6 million but I believe that in the end I’ll be moving there.”
You will be missed Yossi, sorry to see you go.

RBS GETTING IMPATIENT WITH HICKS & GILLETTE
Those Yanks are still at it.
Trying to make a fast buck at the expense of Liverpool FC. With an outrageous asking price of £600 million, they are pricing the club out of the market.
I see that David Moores has come out in public to say he regrets the day he sold out to Hicks and Gillette.
So you didn't want to sell to life-long Red, Steve Morgan, Mr. Moores?
He would have built the new stadium by now with the minimum of fuss or expense.
Shame on you David Moores.
Trying to make a fast buck at the expense of Liverpool FC. With an outrageous asking price of £600 million, they are pricing the club out of the market.
Serious bidders like DIC and the Kraft Multinational business groups would love to buy into Liverpool but they and other investors have baulked at the asking price demanded by the hated owners.
It seems that this annoyed the club's creditors, Royal Bank of Scotland and Wachovia, who Hicks and Gillette borrowed the money from to fund the purchase of the club in the first place, are now demanding the owners to quickly accept the best offer on the table for the sale of the club.
A serious investor is yet to be found despite the club being officially on the market for over a month due to the £600million price tag, which the high street giant will order them to lower that number to ensure an imminent sale of the club.
.
Hicks, again, as is his wont, is trying to squeeze as much cash as he can out of our club before he leaves.

TORRES STAYING AT LIVERPOOL
Liverpool's talismatic striker Fernando Torres looks set to stay at the club for next season at least following comments by his agent Louis Peton.
Peton told Spanish station Punto Radio: “For the moment I can assure fans that Fernando will continue at Liverpool next season.
“Everything is down to Liverpool’s attitude but for the time being Fernando is happy at the club and has a good contract.
“Liverpool have not spoken to us about his future, so he is just concentrating on playing at the World Cup.”
Constant rumours of Torres being sold to Chelsea or Man City are completely wide of the mark as Liverpool's cult hero is in no mood to leave Anfield anytime soon.
Instead Torres has told Spanish compatriot Pepe Reina that he wants to get fully fit, help Spain challenge for the World Cup in South Africa and then help Liverpool challenge for the Premiership title next season.
The fact that Rafa Benitez has money to spend in the summer transfer window is also something Torres has welcomed as he has decried the recent inactivity of LFC in the transfer market. He declared earlier in the year that Liverpool needed four or five new signings to compete with the Chelsea's and Man Utd's of this world.

RAFA GIVEN £20 MILLION TO SPEND ON NEW PLAYERS BY BROUGHTON AND YANKS
It appears that things are, at last beginning to stabilise at Liverpool FC.
Martin Broughton, on the instructions of the Americans, have given Rafa Benitez a transfer kitty of upwards of £20 million to spend on new players this summer.
It seems that Rafa has managed to strengthen his position at the club for next season, at least.
With his high four year salary of £16 million, sacking him was never an option for the cash-strapped club and with the breakdown of talks in a possible move to Juventus, the club and the manager have formed an uneasy alliance to continue working together for next season.
With Benitez's relationship with MD Christian Purslow getting frostier by the day following a dismal season for the club, the manager is now dealing directly with new chairman Martin Broughton.
Several things were discussed in the two meetings including the 7th place finish last season, who Rafa wants to buy this summer and what players he is willing to sell.
The American owners have accepted that they will have to invest between £20 and £30 million in money to get the club competing again at the top tier of the Premiership.
Without that, the chances of them selling the club will be that much more difficult.
Players being mentioned include Sampdoria striker Giampaolo Pazzini, Werder Bremen's young starlet Mesut Ozil and Valencia midfielder Ever Banega.
Players on the way out of Anfield may include Albert Riera, Ryan Babel and Phillip Degen.

RAFA WANTS TO MANAGE SPAIN ONE DAY
Rafael Benitez admits it is his dream to one-day coach the Spanish national team but has reiterated his immediate future lies at Liverpool.
Benitez has been linked with a move away from Anfield this summer, with Inter Milan the latest club to be linked to the 50-year-old, although that rumour was dismissed by the Serie A champions this morning.
Juventus were also believed to be courting Benitez but the Turin giants are set to unveil Luigi Del Neri as their new coach this week, and the Spaniard insists he is some years away from leaving Merseyside.
'Right now I have four years left in my contract with Liverpool and I am very happy there,' Benitez said.
'But, of course, in a few years, once [Spain coach Vicente] Del Bosque ends his work, I would like to be Spain coach. ‘All of the Spanish coaches would like in the future to become national team manager.'
Benitez believes Spain striker Fernando Torres, who is currently in a race against time to be fit for the World Cup after a knee operation, has no intention of leaving Liverpool amid rumours of interest from Barclays Premier League champions Chelsea.
'I am not aware that Torres wants to leave,' said Benitez. 'Now he is only focusing on recovering and going to the World Cup, only then will he think about his future.'
Benitez added that Torres' importance to Liverpool goes far beyond his actions on the pitch, saying: 'Torres has multiplied the Liverpool image in Asia because all the women there are crazy about him.'
The Liverpool boss also hit back at his critics following the Reds' disappointing seventh-placed league finish and early exit from the Champions League last season.
Benitez claims he is a victim of his own success after guiding the club to glory in the Champions League, FA Cup, European Super Cup and Community Shield in his first two years in the role.
'My critics in London say that I am not a good manager but they forget many details,' he said. 'Liverpool has averaged 69 points in the last 12 seasons.
We made a huge mistake, as we won four titles at the start. Then people ask you for more, when in reality in the Premier League it's assumed that at the start a coach needs time to adapt.
'(Manchester United manager Alex) Ferguson took seven years to win the Premier League.'

LIVERPOOL TO BID FOR ITALIAN STRIKER PAZZINI
Liverpool are lining up a bid for Italian striker Giampaolo Pazzini this summer as Rafa Benitez looks to bring in new attacking options to lift his faltering Anfield side.
After a great season at Sampdoria, where he scored 21 goals, the 25 year old has become a target for many sides looking to lure the former Fiorentina man away from the Genoa side.
Liverpool have found themselves too reliant on Fernando Torres over the past two seasons and Benitez is looking to bring in reinforcements.
Whilst the club have secured Milan Jovanovic on a free deal from Standard Liege, they are still hopeful of bringing in another striker to the club.
Pazzini is valued at around £11m and whilst Liverpool are in financial difficulties Benitez believes he can finance any deal for the Italian international by selling some of his squad players.
The likes of Albert Rieira, Philipp Degen and Ryan Babel could all be set to leave the club this summer and their sales would help bring in money to help any move for the Italian interanational.
Many names are sure to be mentioned over the next two months, (Mesut Ozil) lets hope we do get some quality players into the club and soon.

LIVERPOOL WANT WERDER BREMEN STAR MESUT OZIL
Liverpool are hoping to make a successful move for German international starlet Mesut Ozil this summer. Rafa Benitez is a big fan of the Werder Bremen attacker and hopes that he can convince the Bundesliga club to accept an offer in the region of £8m for the 21 year old.
The former Schalke man reportedly has just one year left on his contract and may well be interested in a move to the Premier League and would no doubt be excited by interest shown in him by the Anfield outfit.
Rafa Benitez is looking for more creativity in his midfield and is apparently most interested in Ozil’s ability to play in a number of different positions. The well built Bremen man can play across the midfield as well as effectively on both wings but perhaps most interestingly can be used in the hole behind the strikers.
A number of sides are reportedly interested in Ozil with Arsenal being one side who has repeatedly been linked with a move for his services and has been in sparkling form this term weighing in with nine goals and 17 assists which have helped his side to a third placed finish and a coveted Champions League spot.

KUYT HOPES FOR BETTER FOR LIVERPOOL
Dirk Kuyt, that perennial under-achiever at Anfield has come out with a rallying call for Liverpool football club for next season.
Kuyt said: “Liverpool is a massive club.“It’s very disappointing that we don’t have the Champions League because, up until last season, we had done so well in the competition.
“But this is what has happened.
“We have just got to make sure that we will be right back in it next year.
“Players who want to play in the Champions League would like Liverpool.
“We just have to make sure that we will back in it within one year.
“If we can buy a few more players, I think we will be really close to winning trophies again. We just need a little bit more luck and a bit more quality in the team. Everyone knows that.
“In the meantime, everyone who is here needs to work really hard to improve.”

HICKS & GILLETTE HOPE RAFA LEAVES
The Yanks, after the disasterous season we have had are, for once, united in their view that they want Rafa Benitez to leave.
After the Klinsmann talks were made public in January 2008 – when it became evident the owners had doubted Benitez – Hicks fell firmly into the pro-Rafa camp. Sources add it was also Hicks who was the driving force in giving Benitez a five-year deal last year.
Gillett, on the other hand, although supportive of the Spaniard, felt Benitez worked best under the supervision of a “moderating” executive, specifically the former chief executive, Rick Parry.
Parry left in the summer of last year, after it became clear that, according to one source, “it was obviously going to be a dysfunctional situation going forward.” Hicks was aligned to Benitez, who had been given more powers in his new deal, while Gillett was aligned to Parry, who Gillett believed “kept Rafa in control”. Except Benitez didn’t want to be kept in control, and would not be.
Fast-forward one extremely disappointing season, and Hicks and Gillett are much closer now in mindset. The club is up for sale and Barclays Capital are actively talking to potential bidders.
The Americans still privately insist the club is in great financial shape, despite losses for the parent company of £55m last year, mainly due to interest payments of £40m on debt. They are also prepared to inject more money for transfers this summer “for one last time”, a source says.
The rationale is that they need an asset in good shape to make it attractive for a decent bid, but the Americans harbour “grave doubts” that Benitez should be the man to spend the money to keep the asset in good shape.
They will not sack him because his £16m pay-off is too expensive, and thus hope he leaves of his own volition. If he doesn’t leave – for Juventus or elsewhere – then they will only spend in the summer if the club’s chairman, Martin Broughton, oversees any deals.
It is believed that Benitez and Broughton held a second meeting this evening, lets hope for good news to come from that.

NANDO STAYING AT ANFIELD
Fernando Torres has declared his intentions on his Liverpool future.
Speaking in Spain yesterday after the Spanish National team doctors along with Liverpool's doctors declared themselves happy with his injury progress.Nando was asked by the Spanish press how does it feel to be playing away from his hometown of Madrid?
" I felt strange during my first few games at Anfield, but now I feel at home, but I was raised in Madrid. And thanks to Atletico Madrid, I have become the player I am today at Liverpool."
Hopefully this means the great man is going nowhere and will be staying at Anfield for a long time to come, despite the interest of Man City and others.
Well done Nando.

RAFA WILL STAY "IF CONDITIONS ARE RIGHT"
After the dull 0-0 draw at Wigan to end our woeful season, Rafa Benitez was asked about his future at the club and he came out publicly to say that he will stay at Liverpool "If conditions are right."
"We had a very positive meeting and we hope to have another meeting next week."
Good news if you are a fan of the manager, which I am, most of the time.
It seems that he was asked at the meeting with new chairman, Martin Broughton, what positions he wanted new players for in the team, who he wanted to buy and who he was willing to sell.
Looks like those talks went well then.
So, lets put this sorry season behind us and hope that Rafa buys some quality players for the first team.

BROUGHTON SAYS STAR PLAYERS WONT BE SOLD
Martin Broughton spoke today to reassure fans of Liverpool FC that Gerrard and Torres will not be sold by the club.
"There is absolutely no reason to sell either Torres or Gerrard," said the British Airways chairman, brought in last month by the co-owners to oversee the sale of the club.
"I don't want to sell either of them. Rafa does not want to sell either of them, the club is not looking to sell them,
"We don't need to do it to pay off any debt.
"Torres is one of the great players and every club would love to have him. We have got him and there is no intention of selling him."
With Liverpool deep in debt, the need to find wealthy new owners is now urgent.

BENITEZ & BROUGHTON TALKS WERE POSITIVE
Rafael BenÃtez will hold further talks with the Liverpool hierarchy to resolve his future after both parties exchanged "issues of concern" at a meeting in London today.
The Liverpool manager met the club's chairman, Martin Broughton, and managing director, Christian Purslow, as he ponders whether to accept an offer from Juventus. BenÃtez has been seeking assurances over Liverpool's search for new investment and spending power this summer, while Anfield officials wanted confirmation of the manager's intentions.
A club statement said: "We are pleased that the first of what is intended to be a series of meetings took place between the chairman, managing director and the manager Rafael BenÃtez. The meeting was constructive.
"The chairman shared his views about plans for the future of the club. There was an exchange of views and issues of concern to both the board and the manager which will either be addressed or be picked up on in future meetings."
So everthing is still unclear at Anfield, but at least they are talking to each other.
It is believed that matters discussed included Rafa's future intentions, the availability of transfer funds and prospects of new owners buying the club.
Nothing can really be decided as yet as the club is, at present, in a 'state of limbo'.
Please sort it out Broughton and Purslow, soon.

DALLA VALLE: THE KID SHOULD PLAY AT HULL
Liverpool's young hot-shot striker Lauri Dalla Valle could earn a call-up to Rafa Benitez's final squad...of this season, at least!
The Finnish hotshot is one of the most exciting prospects at Liverpool
Although only 18 years old, the striker certainly knows where the net is, firing 20 goals in 28 appearances for the U18s after arriving from boyhood side JIPPO in 2008.
Within a year he was prompted to Melwood where he now fights for a place in John McMahon's reserves.
He scored the winner for the reserves against Sunderland the other night.
A host of European clubs were interested in Dalla Valle prior to his arrival on Merseyside. Chelsea were rumoured to be circling, while the teenager actually spent three months at Inter Milan before deciding to return to JIPPO.
International recognition has also been forthcoming, with Dalla Valle scoring goals at U16, U17 and U19 level.
However, the youngster could yet choose to represent the Azzurri because of his Italian father.
He is contracted to Liverpool until June 2011
He is our brightest prospect in a long time and I would be bringing him on, at some stage against Hull this Sunday.

The Growth of Soccer in the United States
(Article by Guest Reporter Annette Lyndon)
[mailto:annette.lyndon@gmail.com]
The Growth of Soccer in the United States
The 2010 South African FIFA World Cup is fast approaching. Fans from all over the globe will be flocking to South Africa to watch their countries compete. Excitement is building as the opening match approaches (June 11th). Football, or soccer (US), is the world’s sport, and mounting anticipation can only be expected. However a high level of enthusiasm is coming from an unlikely nation this year, the USA.
While sports are an integral part of American culture, soccer never really gained popularity as a primary spectator sport. For many years soccer was accepted as a popular team sport for youths and never caught on in the mainstream arena. But recently soccer has taken flight and is becoming more than recognized as part of the American sports lineup. Major League Soccer (MLS) was founded in 1993 and today has 16 major league teams. The sport has also attracted a large number of individuals from many backgrounds. Soccer teams and clubs are increasing in popularity in US inner cities. Role models, like Cobi Jones from the LA Galexy, have demonstrated minority involvement within the sport and are encouraging youths from different ethnicities to adopt playing it as well. Soccer has also developed as an important sport for women. In the US, 35% of all soccer players are female, one of the highest percentages of women participants around the world. Soccer in America is helping to cross racial, as well as gender, lines.
While the United States has their own teams, fans are broadening their horizons and watching international play as well. Many American soccer fans have begun to follow popular foreign teams like Spain’s Real Madrid and Britain’s Manchester United. Yet, when the World Cup begins, you can be sure that the majority of the country will be supporting the USA. As of March 31st, the USA ranks 16th out of the total 204 world teams who entered to take part in the games and qualified for the tournament. The USA is scheduled to play its first match against England on the 12th of June. An overwhelming number of American fans are traveling to South Africa to see the US play. It is reported that Americans stand second after South Africans as primary ticket holders for the tournament.
While American fans may have to fly overseas this year to attend the festivities, in the future they may not have to leave their own backyard. The United States is being considered as the host country for the 2018 World Cup. Former President Clinton’s top counselor, Doug Band, has accepted an invitation to join the Board of Directors as a member of the USA Bid Committee in an attempt to bring the World Cup to the US in 2018 or 2022. Adding him to the committee should increase the chance that the U.S. has at winning the bid since Doug Band is known worldwide for his international philanthropic initiatives, thus improving the relationship the U.S. has with over 170 foreign countries. Ultimately, the hope is that the committee effort will continue to boost soccer enthusiasm in the US and bring the nation to the forefront as a serious contender for the bid to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.

BENITEZ WANTS ANSWERS ON ALOT OF QUESTIONS
Under-fire boss Rafa Benitez has called on Liverpool's new boardroom to 'answer alot of questions.'
Rafa wants the full backing of new chairman Martin Broughton, Ian Ayre and Christian Purslow before he turns down the offer of a chance to manage Juventus.
"We have plenty of time in this season, I still have four years left on my contract but I still have to talk to the new chairman. The meeting is to tslk about about the future, but the meeting is to talk about the future of the club is most important.
"For me the club has to answer alot of questions. It is very clear, we have to wait and see what is going on."
Obviously, Rafa is going to play hardball with the board because if he doesn't get the assurances and finances he wants to rebuild the club, then he is probably of to Juve.
I wish him all the best in his endeavours.

BENITEZ AND BROUGHTON IN CRUNCH TALKS THIS WEEK
Rafa Benitez is set to meet new Liverpool Chairman, Martin Broughton for the first time, later this week.
The troubled Liverpool Manager has just overseen a disastrous season which, thankfully comes to a merciful end at Hull next Sunday.
Benitez has publicly complained that circumstances at the club have changed since he signed his new contract a year ago.
"I decided to sign an extension because the squad was good and the money was going to be there. But the conditions have changed.
''The reality is that if you compare with other teams in terms of money, power and the option you have in the market so you can analyse carefully and then you have answers,'' he said.
''The fans are very clever, they know what is going on. It is very clear that things are like this now and still we have to carry on going forward.."
Clearly, he is not a happy man and he will make a strong case for a sizable transfer kitty otherwise it looks like he could be heading off to Juventus in the very near future.
When Broughton was brought in as new chairman, Barclay's bank were also appointed to oversee the takeover of Liverpool by potential buyers.
It was also reported at the time that funding in the region of £60 million would be given to the Manager to spend on new players.
However, given the Manager's recent public outbursts and the very bad season we have had, the boardroom may not be too keen on hanging onto Benitez.
Next week's meeting will be very interesting indeed.

ROY HODGSON TO BE NEW LIVERPOOL BOSS
ROY HODGSON has emerged as the shock front-runner to succeed Rafa Benitez at Liverpool this summer.
The Fulham chief is a wanted man after leading the Londoners to the Europa League final.
Although Benitez's future will not be resolved until the end of the season, Hodgson has emerged as a potential replacement at Anfield.
Hodgson, 62, has told friends he has one big job left in him after his remarkable work with Fulham and is now one of the names being considered by Liverpool.
The Kop have already explored other options, including Martin O'Neill - who is sure to be on the short-list - and Jose Mourinho.
Instead, Hodgson has told close friends he is interested in transforming Liverpool's fortunes, though there has been no official approach.
Liverpool will not make their move for a new manager until the end of the season and will not be panicked into an appointment.
Hodgson's work at Fulham over the past two seasons is much admired at Anfield and he has become a credible solution to their ongoing problems.
The Fulham chief has an excellent managerial record, with the exception of his second season in charge at Blackburn.
At 62, he believes there is another big challenge left in his career and is prepared to listen offers from another club.
If Benitez is to join Juventus in the Summer, then Hodgson will be seen by many as a good man for the job at Anfield

FOURTH NOW ALMOST BEYOND US
Following wins by both Spurs and Man City today against Bolton and Villa respectively, it now looks as if finishing fourth is out of our reach With Spurs on 67 points and City just behind them on 66, we have only a very slim chance of overtaking either team as we have only 62 points to our name.
It would require a draw between those two teams next Wednesday and for them both to lose their final games next Sunday for us to have any chance to get into the Champions League.
Even then we would, at best, be level on points with Spurs, so it would go down to goal difference in that case.
Its possible, I know, but its unlikely to happen.
The only thing we can do if lift our weary bodies for tomorrow's big game against Chelsea at Anfield.
After the deep disappointment of the exit from the Europa League and the toll extra time took on the players, its going to tough, but we have to try and win this game for the pride of the club.
If we give it a real go then we have a chance of beating a Chelsea team who have had a full week's rest while we were busting a gut late into Thursday night.
So lets hope for another spirited display for our last home game of the season.
